This is actually a bit of meta commentary because it's something that I learnt after getting my a** handed to me enough times by the Krogan Battlemaster on the Liara Recruitement mission (original Trilogy - somehow they nerfed this fight in the Legendary Edition). After enough times of getting ended by that guy, I realised that the answer was simple so I brought a lot of biotic firepower so I can Lift, Singularity and Stasis that punk to death while I neutralised his geth lackeys. It took a while for me to realise that Mass Effect 1 didn't require you to disable enemy shields for biotic abilities to take effect. You could lift any of those fools whether their shields were full or not - ME1 became incredibly easy when I realised that (even on nightmare).
